Our Program

Our planned play based programs cater for the development of each child and the group as a whole.

They allow for free play/self selected experiences by the children as well as teacher initiated /structured small and whole group learning experiences.

The emphasis is on informal, indirect teaching centring on play motivated by interest.

Our programs aim to give each child a broad and rounded kindergarten educational experience that caters for the needs of the whole child, including the social, emotional, intellectual, physical, language and creative areas of learning and development.

The children are given many opportunities to develop early maths, science and literacy skills, along with learning life skills they can use throughout life.

Most importantly the children are given lots of time to explore the joys of learning and experience what it is like to be an effective learner.

We view the whole kindergarten as space for learning and use it to create a happy, caring and relaxed atmosphere in an environment that is attractive, stimulating, safe and fun!

The Value of Play-Based Learning

Play-based learning is:
  • Child centred - building on children's strengths, interests and needs
  • Child/peer initiated - they take the lead and choose what and how they will play
  • Teacher planned/guided/ supported/scaffolded/extended
  • Flexible and associated with all areas of learning

Why is a Play-Based approach important?

Play is the way in which children learn.
    • They learn most effectively when they are relaxed and having fun.
    • Children's learning becomes meaningful when they are free to learn at their own rate and in their own way.

What are the benefits of play?
  • Play enables children to develop all their skills.
  • Play helps to develop imagination and creativity, provides a context in which to practice social skills, acts as an outlet for emotional expression, and provides opportunities to understand value systems
  • Long periods of uninterrupted play develop children's concentration skills and their motivation to take responsibility for their own learning
  • Play provides opportunities to improve small and large muscle skills and maintain physical health
  • Providing for play ensures that the children have opportunities, resources and time for play appropriate to each child's stage of development
  • Play provides many opportunities to develop a positive sense of self, which is the most powerful tool for all learning
